Summary of My Experience

As the events and audience acquisition intern at The Everything Channel, I had the amazing opportunity of working along side the event planners and audience acquisition team to see exactly what it took to plan and execute a successful event in the IT professional world.

Interning at an event planning company but working with not only the event planners but the audience team too, I was very interested in how to connect the company more to their past event attendees and vendors after the event.  To achieve the objective of connecting more with past attendees and vendors I edited already made surveys and also created new online surveys to send out to the individuals.  I then collected and compiled the results along with summarizing my findings.  After performing these tasks I learned that connecting with past attendees and vendors is extremely important in a successful event.  Connecting with the individuals helps secure them for future events and helps make the company more successful in the long run.

Another goal I created for myself while interning at The Everything Channel was to help build a larger audience base in order to get more possible attendees/vendors for future events.  In order to attain my goal, I searched different online databases of IT companies and created a spreadsheet of the possible leads.  I also searched the professional networking website, Linkedin to find different people in the companies I researched.  As I would find people and companies I would enter them into an Excel spreadsheet in order to keep them organized and in one place.  After completing this task I realized how important it is to find new leads.  The more possible leads, the more successful the company’s future events could be.

And the last goal I set for myself was to work along side the event planners so I could really see what it took to plan an event.  I did everything ranging from editing agendas and space plans to printing out copies of handouts for the actual event.  I always thought that event planners did a lot but it wasn't until after I had worked with them for a few weeks that I realized just how much they do.  I also learned that in order to be an event planner you need to be extremely organized and patient because you're going to be working with lots of different types of people.

After working at The Everything Channel during Summer 2010, the experience and opportunities that were presented to me ultimately helped me to determine my career interests and give me that one step further to my future career.  After working side by side with the company event planners along with the audience acquisition team it has really showed me what it takes to plan a successful event and what exactly the career of an event planner entails.
